accessible heating control with Pegler Terrier

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

At Aalberts integrated piping systems, we believe smarter control is one of the fastest ways to cut energy use in buildings without compromising comfort. As we mark the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we’re highlighting how inclusive product design can make everyday heating controls easier and more intuitive for everyone. A simple component that makes a big difference is the thermostatic radiator valve (TRV).

what does a thermostatic radiator valve do?

A TRV replaces a manual radiator valve. Instead of leaving radiators either “on” or “off”, the TRV senses the room temperature and automatically regulates the flow of hot water into the radiator. Each room can then be set to the temperature that suits how it’s used, rather than heating the whole home to the same level.

Independent testing in a full-scale UK house has shown that using TRVs correctly can reduce the energy needed for space heating by around 18% over a typical heating season1. But just as important as saving energy is making sure that anyone can confidently control the warmth in their home.

designed for accessibility from the start

The Pegler Terrier range has been developed around the principles of universal design, making everyday controls intuitive, safe and comfortable for as many people as possible, whatever their age, strength or vision.

It includes features such as:

  • ergonomic handle with ridges for secure grip
Tactile ridges around the control help prevent slipping, making adjustments easier for users with limited strength or when hands are wet or cold.
  • colour-coded scale with large numbers
Clear colours and generously sized numbers make it easier to see and understand the setting at a glance, supporting users with low or changing vision.
  • audible and tactile “click” at each setting
Each step between settings gives a distinct click and feel, so users can count positions without needing to look – particularly helpful for blind or visually impaired users.
  • tactile marker on the top
A raised marker helps users orient the valve in the right direction by touch alone.

These practical details turn a small technical component into something that supports independence, confidence and comfort for a wide range of users. This approach to inclusive, user-centred design was recognised when the Pegler Terrier II TRV was selected by the UK Design Council to be featured as a “Millennium Product”.

universal design that lasts

Pegler Terrier valves have stood the test of time in homes across the UK. Their combination of robust engineering, simple operation and carefully considered accessibility features shows how universal design can make everyday heating more comfortable and manageable for everyone – while also supporting more efficient use of energy in the background.
